Char Siu

A plate of char siew rice. A vegetable dish and a bowl of soup.

That’s what I need, for a decent square meal. Pretty simply and plain, yes I admit. I am quite a ‘China man’ .. well, at least that’s what my friends say about my dining preferences. So when I spotted Canton Fare in Solaris Mont Kiara recently, nothing can stop me from checking them out!

Canton Fare is located in Solaris Mont Kiara, a newly developed township, filled with restaurants. Yup, a culinary delight ! Chinese, Japanese, Western, local delights … you name it, it’s all there. With a number of financial institution mushrooming all over, this place is possibly the next boom town. If you’ve not been to Solaris Mont Kiara, I have attached a map for your reference. Usually, I would access it from Plaza Mont Kiara but you can also use the Jalan Duta.

Parking is quite a challenge in Solaris Mont Kiara. Although the place comes with a basement parking, no one seems to be interested to park their car in there. They’d rather double park or even ‘random’ park. Once you’ve found your carpark, your next challenge would be to find a seat in Canton Fare, especially if it’s peak hour such as lunch or dinner.

Ordering in Canton Fare is pretty simple. The menu is bi-lingual or if you prefer, just speak to the waiting staff but don’t expect them to be patient during peak hours. Since I was in a rush, Practically ‘popped’ in there for a quick simple meal and left before the lunch crowd started. Here’s what I ordered …. Drunken Chicken Soup (no, I don’t know if the chicken was drunk), Char Siu and Siu Yuk (barbeque pork and roast pork) and to balance of the load of meat, a vegetable dish … Stir Fried Coslettuce.

The Siu Yuk (Roast Pork) is a MUST-TRY ! I don’t know about the rest but the Siu Yuk is simply fabulous. I haven’t tried it the second time so I can’t really say if they are consistent but if they are …. the Siu Yuk simply melts in your mouth. Yup, to that extent. Crunchy skin and tender flesh. That’s all I can describe about it and to think I am swallowing my saliva as I describe it to you now. Really, you have to try it yourself to appreciate.

I believe Canton Fare is also in Damansara Heights. Here’s their address in Damansara Heights :
71G, Jalan Medan Setia 1,
Plaza Damansara Bukit Damansara,
Kuala Lumpur
Tel : 03- 2093 5279

  1. Chin Said,

I was in Solaris last week. Looks like a frontier boom town with but with upmarket buildings. The siu yuk is so inviting. A roast, a soup and a veg. Very Cantonese.

  6. Nate Said,

That whole Mont Kiara area is a pretty happening place. I remember when it was just a sleepy town, before all the new development. Trying to find parking there now is such a frightful experience. Are the high-class restaurants there worth it?
